The Abbazia di Santa Maria di Pero – Ninni Riva:
hospitality, typical wines of Treviso and agricultural estate

The Abbazia, a historic bulding

The Abbazia is located in the heart of the Veneto region and is a thousand -year old prestine architectural gem. Founded around 958 AD during the Holy Roman Empire, The Benedictine monastery is the oldest building in Monastier (Treviso). It reached its highest development after 1479 when it passed on to a Benedictine congregation guided by the Abbot of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. It then remained under the rule of the Serenissima Repubblica and was later confiscated by Napoleon.
In 1837 the aristocratic Ninni family, of Greek origin, acquired the Abbey and the estate. During the Great War the Abbey was set up as a military hospital and an injured Ernest Hemingway was hospitalized there. In the year 2000 the family began an important restoration project which transformed the ancient monastery in a treasured building.
With the restoration the spaces of the Abbazia now serve many functions: from hospitality – with three splendid bedrooms ideal for those seeking a stay outside the traditional itineraries but also wishing to enjoy all the comforts and intimacy – to hosting of events – with many spacious rooms ideal to host events such as parties, meetings, congresses, expositions, exhibitions etc.
Meanwhile, the Ninni Riva family has been managing the vast agricultural estate, taking particular care in reviving the viticulture tradition of the monks of the monastery. Three different wines are produced and sold now, two Prosecco DOC and a Pinot Grigio Venezia DOC- they can be found in the wine shop, where it’s also possible to do tastings.
